Declaration of Intent

The course of human events in America has led to the determination that the government of the United States is no longer a government for the people elected by the people. The system is America has been corrupted and is being held hostage by the political system. Our forefathers had the courage to put in place checks and balances to prevent the politicians from taking advantage of the American people. It is time to invoke those checks and restore balance to the system.

America was founded on the principle that you get nothing when you come here except for the opportunity to achieve everything that you can imagine. That principle holds true today. If that were not true, we would not have an immigration problem. The world envies the freedom that America offers. Americans with nothing but drive and ambition can work hard and be successful.

This country was founded with a revolution that started because of the taxation of it citizens. The next revolution will be about corrupt politicians. We can change that by changing the face of the political system.

The revolution that we intend to incite is from within and will be led by true leaders who have gained the experience in the worlds hardest on the job training course, the field of battle. We will take the country back by using the system that was designed. When the citizens of America are no longer happy with the representation in Washington, they have the ability to remove those people from power. We will embrace that system and restore dignity to the offices of the US Congress.

The politicians in government today have become more concerned with power and greed as evidenced by the corruption in the system. The corruption is not partisan; it extends across the aisle into both parties. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

14% Congressional Approval rating.  Americans approve of only 14 out of 100 Senators and 60 out of 435 Representatives in Congress. 

Earmarks – too numerous to list.  The continuous spending of taxpayer money on pet projects is unacceptable.

Jack Abramoff, Former Lobbyist – Abramoff is at the center of a massive public corruption investigation by the Department of Justice that, in the end, could involve as many as a dozen members of Congress.

Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) – In January 2006, Hillary Clinton’s fundraising operation was fined $35,000 by the Federal Election Commission for failing to accurately report more than $700,000 in contributions to Clinton’s Senate 2000 campaign.  New information also surfaced in 2006 raising more questions about Hillary and her brother Anthony Rodham’s connection to the Clinton Pardongate scandal, where presidential pardons were allegedly traded in exchange for cash and other favors.

Former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham (R-CA) – In November 2005, Cunningham pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, mail fraud, wire fraud, and tax evasion.  He was sentenced to 8 years, four months in prison and ordered to pay $1.8 million in restitution in March 2006.

Former Rep. Tom Delay (R-TX) – Tom DeLay, who was forced to step down from his position as House Majority Leader and then resign from Congress, decided in 2006 not to run for re-election.  Congressman DeLay has been embroiled in a series of scandals from bribery to influence peddling, and was indicted twice by grand juries in Texas.

Former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) – Foley left the House in disgrace after news broke that he had been sending predatory homosexual emails to a House page.  A recent House Ethics Committee report indicated that Republican leaders knew about Foley’s dangerous behavior, but failed to take action.  Democrats, meanwhile, shopped the story to the press to influence the elections.  Outrageously, the Committee recommended no punishment for those involved.

Rep. Denny Hastert (R-IL) – In addition to mishandling the Foley scandal, outgoing House Speaker Dennis Hastert allowed House ethics process to grind to a halt on his watch.  Gary Condit, Cynthia McKinney, William Jefferson, John Conyers, Tom Delay, Duke Cunningham, Jim McDermott, Patrick Kennedy are examples of alleged wrongdoers who faced little-to-no ethics enforcement in the House.

Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) – Hastings is one of only six federal judges to be removed from office through impeachment and has accumulated staggering liabilities ranging from $2,130,006 to $7,350,000.  Hastings was “next in line” for Chairmanship of the House Select Committee on Intelligence until a wave of protest forced Nancy Pelosi to select another candidate.  Nonetheless, Hastings is expected to continue to serve on the Intelligence Committee.

Rep. William “Dollar Bill” Jefferson (D-LA) – Jefferson is alleged to have accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to help broker high-tech business deals in Nigeria.  According to press reports, he was also caught on tape discussing the deals, while an FBI search of his home uncovered $90,000 in cash stuffed in his freezer.

Former Rep. Bob Ney (R-OH) – Ohio Republican Congressman Bob Ney resigned in early November 2006, three weeks after pleading guilty for accepting bribes from an Indian casino in exchange for legislative favors.  Ney was the first congressman to be convicted of a crime in the web of scandals involving former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and is expected to serve a jail sentence. 

Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) – Senator Reid came under fire in 2006 for failing to properly report to Congress a $700,000 land deal.  Reid also accepted more than $30,000 of Abramoff-tainted money allegedly in return for his ''cooperation'' in matters related Nevada Indian gaming.

Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) – According to complaints released by the House Ethics Committee recently, aides to Representative John Conyers (D-MI) alleged their former boss repeatedly violated House ethics rules, forcing them to serve as his personal servants, valets, and as campaign staff while on the government payroll.

Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) – In May 2006, Kennedy crashed his car into a Capitol Hill barricade at nearly 3 a.m. in the morning.  Kennedy blamed the incident on a reaction to prescription pills, but officers at the scene said he smelled of alcohol.  Nonetheless, they escorted him home rather than arresting him.

Former Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) – McKinney assaulted a Capitol Hill police officer in April after refusing to go through a metal detector.  While McKinney was never forced to answer in a court of law for her behavior, she lost her bid for re-election in 2006.

Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) – Iraq war critic John Murtha was incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s first choice for House Majority Leader despite the ethical skeletons in his closet. Murtha is an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1980 “Abscam” scandal, which included the arrest and convictions of a senator and six congressmen.  Murtha, whose current ethics continue to be questioned, lost his bid for Majority Leader to Maryland Democrat Steny Hoyer.

Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) – News reports surfaced in 2006 that Illinois Senator Barak Obama entered into an unusual land deal with a now-indicted political fundraiser, Tony Rezko.  The complicated real estate transaction occurred when it was widely known that Rezko was under federal investigation in a political corruption scandal.

David Safavian, Former Bush Administration Official – Safavian, the former White House Chief of Procurement and former Chief of Staff for the General Services Administration, was indicted on September 19, 2006 on five counts of lying about his dealings with former lobbyist Jack Abramoff and obstructing a Senate investigation of his dealings.  Safavian resigned from his White House position three days prior to his arrest.

We, therefore, the Veterans of the United States Armed Forces of the United States of America, do solemnly and publicly declare that we shall change the face of the political system in America. We shall attend caucuses, become delegates and run for political office. We shall hold true the moral and ethical values we learned as members of the Armed Forces to maintain the integrity of the offices we shall hold. We shall endure no longer the corruption in American Government.

I ask all members of the Armed Forces to stand up and volunteer one more time. I ask you to get involved for the sake of the country. We have put our lives on the line in the name of Freedom on foreign soil. It is time for us to stand up for what is right in America. We can take back America by taking back our political system and making it work for the people and not the politicians.

Disclaimer

I understand that Townhall is a predominantly Right Leaning blog forum.  I truly believe that the issues related to National Defense and more importantly the Global War on Terror (including Iraq and AF) are not PARTISAN issues.  They are AMERICAN issues. 

I am clearly right leaning in my views but that has no bearing on the message I am trying to convey with this blog.  I want left leaning Veterans to get involved as well.  I would rather see two Veterans arguing across the aisle rather than 2 non-veterans.  I have watched veterans on both sides put party politics in front of making the correct choice for supporting the troops and winning the war.  I disagree with partisan politics taking precedence in a time of war.

I am not targeting Republicans or Democrats.  I am targeting Veterans and Veterans fall into both categories.  In terms of the war, veterans know the importance of completing the mission and that winning the war in Iraq is the correct course of action.  I want all Veterans to get involved and have a voice in the system whether they agree with me or not.

This is a non-partisan issue and we need leaders who will not play politics.  I may be dreaming of a world many in Washington do not believe is possible but to them I ask one question.  Why are you still in Washington?  Please step down and let new, fresh leadership take our beloved country forward.  Let go of your grasp on power and realize that the country needs to end the stalemate between the dinosaurs of Washington and empower the next generation of leadership.

Introduction

I started to write this declaration in 2004 shortly after I returned home from Afghanistan.  I was very frustrated by the portrayal of the war and of the military by both the media and the Democratic politicians who disagreed with the war.  Sen. John Kerry, Rep John Murtha, Sen. Chuck Hagel just to name a few.  Men who had worn the uniform as I had and were turning their backs on the men and women of the Armed Forces who were putting their lives on the line for the country.  These so called “leaders” of the country were not standing behind the troops that they had voted to send to war.  Now they portray the war as belonging to Pres. Bush, as if they had nothing to do with sending the young men and women into battle.

The more I heard, the more frustrated I became.  There had to be something that I could do to change the system.  I made a decision to get involved in politics.  I attended meetings for local, State and National level political groups for both Republicans and Democrats.  I determined that the Republicans were the best chance to make a difference in supporting the war.  I attended my precinct caucus and was elected Chair of the precinct within 2 hours.  I then attended the Wright County Republican convention as a delegate and was elected as an alternate to the 6th District Congressional Convention.  I would have my voice in who represented me in the next election.  Or so I thought.  The reality was that the Rep. Michele Bachmann had run a textbook grassroots campaign and the majority of the delegates supported her.  I had committed my support to the lone veteran in the race.  She had banded groups of supporters together and convinced them to get elected as delegates in order to defeat the party faithful in the 6th District. 


Over the next 2 years as the war in Iraq grew progressively worse.  Our strategy in Iraq was failing and we needed a change.  The Democrats jumped on this chance politically to gain seats in Congress.  To gain seats in Congress!!!  The lives of the soldiers that sacrificed in the war had become a political weapon for politicians to gain seats.  I felt extremely small and insignificant.  When I returned from Afghanistan I was proud of what I had done and accomplished as I served my country.  By the end of 2006 I felt like a pawn for Washington Politicians to move around the chessboard of the world.

I want America to be represented by Men and Women who understand the value of human life.  People who will not make decisions to send soldiers to war and then change their mind for political gain.  People who will not point the finger of blame to gain seats.  People who will stand by their decisions and provide the leadership this country needs.


This declaration is meant to change that.  I intend to motivate, inspire and move veterans into action.  I want veterans with the leadership, experience and commitment to be in charge of this country.  The times of career politicians are drawing to a close.


The
Declaration of Independence begins with this:

“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

 

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”
